Mulvane Splash Pad Park
Client: City of Mulvane, KS
Location: Nessly Auto Park Splash Pad (Downtown) Mulvane, KS
Category: Civic Construction
Architect: MKEC Engineering, Inc.
Year of Completion: 2024
The Nessly Auto Park Splash Pad is located in the heart of downtown, Mulvane, Kansas at Prather & Main St. Snodgrass & Sons Construction was selected as a GC on the Mulvane Park after a RFQ selection committee. Selected to design and build a splash pad theme park as lined out by Chris young at Young & Associates.
The park was designed by MKEC and the CMU structure was designed by Team Architecture. Some of the great features of this project include:
- 1,800 SF of artificial turf installed by Turf Design.
- 4,500 SF of concrete splash pad area with 16 commercial grade lighted spray jets and a push button activator.
- 1,760 SF structural steel covered canopy with a standing seam roof. Underneath the covered canopy is a 600 SF CMU conditioned restroom and a utility room that services the park.
Our goal was to design a splash pad without risk to children. Snodgrass stated in our proposal that we would prefer to connect directly to water and waste in lieu of the specified water recycling plan as shown in the RFQ. A defining decision point for Snodgrass to be selected for the project.
Some unique challenges of the project: The site conditions of the empty lot were unusual. The city of Mulvane had purchased the land after a fire brought down the old structures. While clearing the land, we uncovered lots of buried debris. This made it difficult to build up the site to proper building compaction standards.
Snodgrass reworked the storm sewer inlets to allow proper run off due to existing rain water concerns.
Another element to the project included reworking the existing damaged building. The city owned a wall that was attached to another property owner. The tenant was Laurie’s Kitchen. The city’s portion of the wall was dilapidated. Snodgrass & Sons was hired to ensure the wall was structurally sound, and if so, to restore.
Snodgrass & Sons self-performed the civil, utilities, concrete, earthwork, standing-seam roofing, and carpentry work. Splash Zone was the splash pad contractor. American Mechanical did the mechanical and plumbing for the canopy structure, Atlas installed the electrical, Noel Masonry the mason, and Turf Design installed the turf.
