Client: Sedgwick County, Kansas
Location: 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., Wichita, KS 67212
Category: Civic Construction
Architect: WDM Architects P.A.
Year of Completion: 2022
The Sedgwick County Zoo project includes a 2,046 Sq. Ft. single-story Multi-Purpose Holding Building with elaborate interior and exterior animal caging systems.
The building sits on a reinforced concrete slab foundation with zoned radiant heat flooring throughout to keep the animals warm. The steel building is comprised of metal wall panels, and a standing seam metal roof, matching the design of the surrounding buildings.
The interior floor plan includes professionally designed and manufactured cage-work complete with a galvanized steel rope pulley system with sliding door tracks. The cages are designed and constructed for animal safety to prevent entrapment, sharp edges or other defects that could harm the animals. All cage and entry doors are made of a fiberglass composite to facilitate safe animal occupancy. There is a trench drain system with removable fiberglass grate in the Keeper Isle of the center of the building. The Zoo Keepers have a separate work area with a wash sink. Added utilities and connections in the scope are a hydronic heating system, waste pipe, and new gas service with gas unit heaters installed.
The project is complete with exterior cage work functioning as outdoor holding areas on three sides of the building featuring feeding shelves. On the embankment to the east of the building Snodgrass installed a limestone retaining wall to prevent erosion.
