McConnell AFB (KANG) - Replace Roofs
Client: US Department – The Air Force
Location: McConnell AFB, KS 67221
Category: Government Construction
Year of Completion: 2024
This design-build project at Kansas Air National Guard Building includes: Repair and replace (3) sections of roofs, North, Central, and South, and to remodel the Starbase classroom interior.
The existing North roof was deteriorating. The project includes patching the roof; removing the appx. 24’x24′ area of membrane, roof insulation, and rusted metal decking and replacing with new metal decking, insulation and TPO membrane to match existing. In the interior of the room below, Snodgrass repaired the rusted beams and repainted to coat the beams and prevent from any rust reoccurring.
The largest, Central roof work includes: 26 existing skylights demolition, infill with insulation, reinforcing and prepping for the TPO install. Remove and replace the interior side of the east and west parapet walls, installing new Kingspan insulated metal wall panels, and replacing all new parapet wall caps. The existing internal gutter was also deteriorating and causing leaks on the interior of the building. Snodgrass insulated the internal metal guttering and Farha lined the entire section with TPO. The entire central roof received a new 60 mil TPO membrane over flute filler, rigid insulation and cover board, covering the existing standing seam metal panels. A retrofit system was the ideal situation as the building was occupied during construction.
The entire south roof received a new 60 mil TPO membrane over flute filler, rigid insulation and cover board, covering the existing standing seam metal panels. Snodgrass installed new rainleaders with underground PVC piping that lead to existing inlets. The new rainleader system was installed with the idea that rain/ice would not collect on the sidewalk any longer, and provided a much safer situation for the users.
A few design challenges in the project was the prefinished metal coping to overlap existing conditions and creating an even slope across the top of the parapet walls. The width and height ranged throughout so Snodgrass and the design team reworked the plans in order to achieve a cohesive system. Also, the skylight patching infill was a slight challenge to design in order to support the new roof, removing the metal ducts from below, and adding insulation, all while protecting the interior from potential weather.
Starbase remodel includes: Demo and replace flooring. Installed luxury vinyl tile flooring & base throughout the large classroom space. Snodgrass also demo’d (3) existing hollow metal doors and frames from existing masonry and prepped for new door installation. Installed (3) new galvanized metal insulated doors and painted to match current base standards.
